Signs your network cabinet needs tidying

The network cabinet is the heart of your network, but it is often the most neglected part. Years of quick changes leave it tangled and hard to work on. That costs time every time something goes wrong.

Warning signs

  • A wall of tangled patch leads. Nobody can follow a cable from one end to the other without pulling on it.

  • No labels. Ports and points are not marked, so tracing a fault means guesswork.

  • Equipment sitting on the floor or on top of the cabinet. Switches, routers and power adaptors outside the rack are easy to knock and hard to cool.

  • It runs hot. Blocked vents and crowded kit shorten the life of equipment and cause random faults.

  • Old kit still connected. Unused switches and leads add clutter and confusion.

  • The door will not close. A sure sign it has outgrown its space.

Why it matters

An untidy cabinet makes every fault take longer to find, increases the chance of someone unplugging the wrong thing, and makes upgrades harder and more expensive.

What a tidy-up involves

  • Mapping what is connected and removing anything no longer used.

  • Mounting equipment properly in the rack.

  • Replacing long, tangled leads with correctly sized patch leads.

  • Adding cable management so everything is neat and easy to follow.

  • Labelling every port and point to match a simple record.

  • Checking power and airflow.

We can usually do this out of hours to keep disruption to a minimum. See our equipment installation service or ask for a free quote.
